Angela Hayes Named Top 3 Finalist for Irish Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year 2025
KILKENNY, IRELAND — Angela Hayes, founder of the Thomas Hayes Trust and leading advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, has been named one of the top three finalists for the prestigious Irish Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year 2025 Award.
Angela was shortlisted for her tireless and deeply personal work in suicide intervention, crisis support, and her role in creating Teac Tom, a vital lifeline for individuals and families affected by suicide and mental health struggles. The award recognises individuals who have shown extraordinary compassion, courage, and commitment to alleviating human suffering.
“This recognition isn’t just about me — it’s for every family who has walked through the darkest days and kept going,” said Angela Hayes, responding to the announcement. “Teac Tom was born out of personal tragedy, but it stands today as a place of hope, healing, and humanity. I know personally you can't get back what you've lost, but you can embrace your future and how you live it. I am the voice for the members of my family that didn’t have help and unfortunately aren’t here anymore. I am deeply honoured and grateful to be named among such inspiring people.”
The Irish Red Cross, which received hundreds of nominations from across the country, highlighted Angela’s enduring impact on the south-east of Ireland and beyond.
Deirdre Garvey, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, commented:
“Angela’s work exemplifies the very spirit of humanitarianism. Her courage in transforming profound loss into a beacon of support for others is nothing short of extraordinary. We are proud to recognise her efforts among the top humanitarian figures in Ireland this year.”
Also offering his praise, Billy Kelleher, Irish Member of European Parliament and representative for the South constituency, said:
“Angela Hayes represents the very best of Irish civic leadership — someone who has turned personal grief into a powerful force for public good. Her contribution to mental health support in Ireland is not only transformative, it is essential. Her nomination is richly deserved.”
The winner of the Humanitarian of the Year Award will be announced at the Irish Red Cross Annual Awards Gala on May 8, 2025 in Dublin.
